Föckinghausen, located at the southern edge of the nature park „Arnsberger Wald“ (Arnsberg Forest), is a former logger and charcoal burner settlement. Today, with its school youth hostel, family holiday accomodation and the hotel, it is a popular holiday destination.
You set off behind the hotel and follow the path between the meadows towards the forest. At the holiday home, you turn right onto A1/A3. You follow this trail until you have covered the slowly increasing gradient and arrive on top at the 4-way crossroads with refuge („Gemeinheitskopf“), where you can take a short break. You continue on your left on X1 („Plackweg“), an old army and trade road which was already used by Napoleon and his army.
You continue for a while on the ridge of the nature park „Arnsberger Wald“ (Arnsberg Forest). Continuing on X1, you pass the refuge at „Ausspann“ (547 m above mean sea level), before you reach the next crossroad of paths, „Markes Kreuz“. You turn left and follow the diamond-shape marked path downhills through a mixed forest. Continue straight on the street until you reach the guesthouse „Dollen Hof“. Here, the old town-centre of Eversberg starts with its beautiful timbered houses.
A bit further straight ahead, in the „Mittelstraße“ (Middle Street), you will find on your left-hand side the museum of local farming, craft and trade history.
It collects and exhibits a potpourri of historic material of the region. Open on Tuesday-Thursday (from 15.00 to 18.00 hours) and on Sunday (from 11.00 to 12.00 hours. Also worth seeing is the historic parish church St. John the Evangelist, the construction of which was started in the year 1242 and which was bult in the Romanic-Gothic cross-over style.
The ruins of the fortress of Eversberg (erected from 1093-1124) are located on a hill (455 m above mean sea level) high above Eversberg. A small side-tower still exists and has been built into a look-out. From the observation deck you can obtain a far-reaching view of the „land of the 1,000 mountains“.
The townhall is equally worth seeing. It serves as a reminder that Eversberg was, until 1975, an independent town. The entrance is emblazoned with a boar’s head, the symbol of the town, and a mighty deer antler. The „Lindenhof“ invites you to a refreshment (closed on Wednesdays). Strolling through the streets of Eversberg you will discover many beautiful houses, angles and corners. Let us head back.
After returning to the guesthouse „Dollen Hof“, we take the opposite street and follow A6 through the meadows of Eversberg, passing the model airplane club. We then follow XR back to Föckinghausen.
